This traditional remedy is packed with health benefits, making it a must-have in your pantry. If you’re curious about what fire cider is, why it should be part of your daily routine, and how to make it at home, you’re in the right spot!

What is Fire Cider?
Fire cider is an herbal tonic made from a mix of apple cider vinegar, fresh horseradish, onions, garlic, chili peppers, and various herbs. The ingredients work together to strengthen your immune system and support overall health. We typically make ours in September/October to have a batch ready to tackle cold and flu season over the colder months.
Typically fire cider can be taken as a quick shot, used in salad dressings, or diluted in water for a drink. For example, just 1 tablespoon of fire cider can provide a noticeable energy boost, making it perfect for morning routines.
Medical Benefits Galore
Fire cider is celebrated for numerous health perks, especially during cold and flu season. Here are some compelling benefits backed by research:
Immune Support: Studies show that garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Garlic can reduce the risk of colds by up to 63%. Coupled with onions and chili peppers, fire cider becomes a powerhouse for maintaining a healthy immune system.
Digestive Health: Research indicates that apple cider vinegar can improve digestion by up to 20%. By including fire cider in your meals, you can stimulate digestion and alleviate bloating.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Ingredients like horseradish and turmeric contain compounds that can decrease inflammation markers in the body.
Boosts Energy: Consumers often report increased energy levels after taking fire cider. A quick shot each morning might just be the morning kick you need!
Supports Respiratory Health: Horseradish can help open up nasal passages, providing relief from sinus congestion. It is particularly effective during allergy season.
How to Make Fire Cider
Ingredients
1 quart apple cider vinegar
1/3 cup horseradish
1 large onion, chopped (I like to use red onion for this)
10 cloves garlic, chopped
1-2 hot peppers (like jalapeño or habanero), chopped (remove seeds for less heat)
1/4 cup freshly grated ginger
1-2 tablespoons turmeric (fresh or powdered)
2 tbsp minced garlic
1 lemon, sliced with rinds
2 tsp dried rosemary
1 tsp dried thyme
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp black peppercorns
1/4 C honey or maple syrup (to taste)
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients
Combine in a Jar: Place all the ingredients except for honey and vinegar into a large glass jar, leaving some space at the top.
Add Vinegar: Pour the apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until the jar is full. Use a wooden spoon to push down the solids to ensure they’re submerged.
Infusion Time: Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks. Shake it every day for even infusion.
Strain and Sweeten: After about a month, strain using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into another clean jar. Add honey or maple syrup to taste for a balanced flavor.
Store: Keep your fire cider in the fridge or a cool pantry. It can last several months!
